This is a very interesting site and a great organization. It is super to see that there are people who are committed to preserving Bessemer's grand old homes as well as improving the city without destroying the beauty that once was. I am all for progress but not at such a high price as the loss of so many of the wonderful buildings! The BHHA promotes not only preservation but shows the developers of today how you can restore and reuse! These houses & buildings have value and can still serve a purpose! The city of Bessemer needs to quit expanding outward until all of the vacant buildings and homes are back in use!!!!

My only complaint is that this site takes a really long time to come up...and I am online via a cable...so anything you can do to speed up the pages coming up would be appreciated.

Thank you...for your members commitment to preserving the grand old homes and building in the city of Bessemer!!!!

I happened on your site and was reminded of so much from my childhood. I grew up on Berkley Avenue leaving Bessemer in the mid sixties. The first unidentified house I recognized was where the McEniry's lived that later became the Women's Clubhouse. My Grandmother used to send me down to pick the mint that grew around the outside tap in the back yard when she was having bridge parties. My family lived one house down on the corner of 16th Street and Berkley at 1608 a big old place that I know now was Queen Anne. It was even years ago, the last time I saw it, in pretty bad shape. A sad end after years of holidays and family gatherings there. I often spent weekends with my Aunt who lived in the Dennis house in Lakewood. As a child a high point of Christmas was Mr. Stovall's installation of Santa Claus on the roof . My father always joked that when she and her husband bought the house the only thing they changed was the lock on the front door. Lordy! How the time passes!

1905 Berkley Ave

My husband and I live in TN and came across this house for sale. We fell in love with it but are hesitant about the location do to some message board postings. Would you be able to tell me what the area is like? Is it safe to raise family?
